I almost bought those same Danner’s around Thanksgiving when they were on sale and am now kicking myself for not. One of my coworkers has them and while I’ve never asked directly, they seem to be holding up pretty well.

Yeah I have Asolo currently, I had some Danners in the military that were fine but haven’t tried those kind. I have some Adidas GTX Swift or something like that and they are actually amazing. I have beat the crap out of them and the soles are still good, they are Gore Tex, they are light as hell and they have a great toe bumper. You could probably give these a touch up spray and they would be good to go. They really surprised me, nothing has frayed or come apart anywhere. I started with the shoes for light stuff and eventually bought the boots for places I though ankle support would be good.

I struggle to buy these light weight stuff anymore since I’ve had north face, 5.10 and others fall apart out here in the west way too early. these are worth looking at though.

I should also say that I’ve switched over to The North Face for hiking five years ago or so. My current pair is this Hedgehog GTX. I think it’s been replaced with a revised version. Soles are Vibram and do well. I’ve gone through a few pairs of TNF boots now (and too many to count TNF running/trail shoes) and the experience can best be summed up as super comfy out of the box, good waterproofing (GTX so no surprise), but they don’t hold up as well as the name brands that you mentioned. They are however significantly less expensive and don’t need much break in so it’s a trade I’m happy with.

I feel ya, I wasn’t really expecting much but they are still going. My tough boots are all a bit too heavy. I have a pair of La Sportiva Makalu for that have never felt good, they don’t seem to break in, need a few hundred miles I guess.

TNF has been on a sharp downhill slope for years, and I don’t have any interest in their stuff anymore. It’s hardly the respected brand it used to be. I would trust eddie bauer before I bought another pair of TNF.

seriously, get the one that fits best. If you are miles from anywhere you will care much more about the comfort than the build quality, and if these are for “special occasion” use you don’t need the most durable shoes there are. If there’s a shoe brand you like, that you know your foot fits well, see if they have a mid-hiker, and if it’s not a waterproof hiker consider that wool has excellent insulating properties even when wet, and that modern waterproofing chemicals work GREAT. I like my Keenes, and have been highly satisfied by Garmont in the past, but they are hard to find in the USA these days, REI carries them and their online shop has reasonable pricing, but again, try them on...

These will replace my long time mid hikers that are worn out, so they wont be special use. But for fit and wool. YES. I agree.

I’ve had good luck with the LaSportiva trail runners, but their carcasses are VERY stiff and do not change shape easily, if your feet don’t like them, they never will.

Their boots have always treated me well, the shoes/sneakers I am not too familiar with. Do you guys have REI in your area? I love that place, I must have tried on at least 5 or 6 hiking boots and used their makeshift hiking test area before I settled on some Merrells. Worth a look just based on price alone, hope you find what you need!

Very happy with them, they have been awesome, waterproof, easy to wear, and comfortable. I wear them daily throughout the winter walking the doggo - 2km in the park behind our house - Fridays I usually wear them to work..

I missed that you had Garmont in your preferred fit list the first read through... I’d definitely go for them if it were me... Mystic II Mid or Tower Hike GTX... on the other hand, since EMS quit carrying Garmont there isn’t a store that sells them within 200 miles of me these days.... I still refuse to buy shoes online, it just feels wrong to me.

every Scarpa I’ve ever owned has worn out too quickly, though they do fit well for me, and my experience of Asolo is that they last forever, but the fit starts to fail long before the rest of the shoe, making them something you can no longer use, even though they technically aren’t broken, and then I end up feeling like I over paid for a super tough shoe that I still can’t use any longer than a short lived shoe...

Back in the day TNF stuff was the shit. The stuff the pros used, no compromise. Expensive but worth it.

Last time I was at their outlet store in Maine they had quilted laptop sleeves on clearance.

Oh how the mighty have fallen.

Keen targhee 2 mid. I’ve tried a lot of boots, from Red Wing, to Clark’s, to Wolverine and White’s.

Out of the box, these Keen’s are incredibly comfortable. Zero break-in period needed. The footbox is well protected, the grip is great on all surfaces, and the price is great. I use these for all hikes, use them at work in the rainy/cold seasons and take them camping in subzero winter conditions. They deliver. I would pick these over anything else in the sub-$300 category for do-anything boots. Assuming you don’t care about looks, they’re NOT stylish by any means. I can normally find them at REI for slightly below $100. One pair has lasted me 3 years of almost constant wear and heavy abuse. They’re JUST starting to lose waterproof and the rubber outsole is delaminating slightly

Fair enough. They aren’t my go-to for gear like they used to be ten years ago. (Last TNF jacket I bought was several years ago and it had issues right from the factory.) But their footwear just fits my feet so well and is still a good step up from Nike/Adidas that I keep buying it.

Agreed. I still have an old TNF windbreaker from like 1999 that just won’t die. It’s ugly but it works so well. Recently they’ve become much more of a fashion brand. But their shoes/boots still fit me really well. FWIW, I also think Mountain Hardwear has also really taken a quality dive over the past few years. I’ve been pretty unhappy with a couple jackets of theirs that I have - good ideas but dumb stuff like shitty zippers that always come undone. I know Patagonia is kind of trendy these days too, but they are one of the few outdoor brands that has been around that I’ve had good luck with still.

I don’t know jack about hiking boots, but I do have a friend who hiked the whole Appalachian Trail and he ditched hiking boots about 25 miles into it and just wore running shoes for the remainder. He went through several pairs but said that they were far better than heavy boots.

Planned obsolescence? Er... What’s the word for the section that’s designed intentionally to fail first..? I don’t know man, but for the price I can’t complain with three solid years of service.

Whereabouts are you going? If you’re looking at temps consistently in the teens or lower you might consider some insulated boots
